MIPCOM BREAKING NEWS: Haut et Court TV and July-August Productions Partnering on RUBBER DUCKS, a New One-hour Thriller/Drama Series Co-developed and Distributed by Tandem...

13.10.2014

Cannes, France, 13 Oct. – Haut et Court TV and July-August Productions to develop a new, 10x1-hr ecological & psychological thriller/drama series, Rubber Ducks, co-developed with Tandem, it was announced today by Caroline Benjo, Managing Director, Haut et Court TV (Les Revenants). Exclusive worldwide distribution will also be handled by Tandem.

A fictionalized story based on an actual experiment undertaken by NASA, Rubber Ducks explores ideas of ecological change not only on the environment but also on human behavior. In 2008, NASA embarked on a low-tech experiment, dropping 90 rubber duck toys through holes in a Greenland glacier, trying to track how the Arctic icecap is melting. Hoping the rubber ducks would find their way into channels beneath the hard-packed surface, scientists planned to track the flow of melting water into the ocean. Lost without a trace, the ducks pop up ten years later in unlikely isolated communities where the inhabitants are directly affected, in unexpected ways. Everything starts to change: emotions, relationships, love, sex, how we live and how we die. Could the impending catastrophe be more than climactic?

Says Caroline Benjo, "Following the path of The Returned's new take on a genre, we are thrilled to be producing this amazing high concept/ character-driven series, playing with the viewers expectations like any great modern TV storytelling -- entertaining, complex, frightening and funny at the same time, while scrutinizing our modern world's intimate idiosyncrasies through the most fascinating events."

July-August Productions' Eilon Ratzkovsky added, "Yael Hedaya's ability to merge our innermost thoughts and feelings with global scale environmental disorders will surely bring something fresh to our TV screens. The more we dig into this concept, the more fascinated we get."

"We have great admiration and respect for the incredible success and critical acclaim Haut et Court and July-August Productions have achieved with their remarkable projects and are very excited to be co-developing and distributing this thrilling and unique show with them," says Tandem's Executive VP / Partner Jonas Bauer. "Rubber Ducks -- with such a tantalizing storyline, it will surely appeal to audiences worldwide."

Rubber Ducks is written by Yael Hedaya, a novelist and screenwriter known for her work on the successful and highly acclaimed, award-winning Israeli drama series In Treatment, which HBO in the U.S. produced as an English-language version. Producers are Haut et Court's Caroline Benjo, Jimmy Desmarais, Carole Scotta and Simon Arnal and July-August Productions' Eilon Ratzkovsky, Lisa and Yossi Uzrad and Guy Jacuel.

"We are thrilled for Mychael," says Rola Bauer, President / Partner Tandem Communications (a STUDIOCANAL company). "Mychael's incredible musical talent added rich layers and depth to our show. It wouldn't have been the same without his insightful score."

Mychael Danna is an Academy Award®-winning film composer recognized for his evocative blending of non-western traditions with orchestral and electronic music. He composed the trans-culturally inspired 2013 Oscar and Golden Globe-winning score for Ang Lee's Life of Pi, as well as many award-winning scores for his longtime collaborator, Atom Egoyan. "The most gratifying filmmaking experiences are ones that take effort to unpeel the layers surrounding the heart of the story and to find the best musical expression of that heart," says Danna. "Those are always the film scores I am most proud of."

World Without End stars Emmy and Golden Globe-winner Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City, The Big C), two-time Oscar-nominee, Golden Globe and BAFTA-winner Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, The Young Victoria), Olivier® and Tony®-nominee Ben Chaplin (The Thin Red Line, Me and Orson Welles), Oscar-nominee and Golden Globe-winner Peter Firth (MI5, The Hunt for Red October), BAFTA®-nominee Charlotte Riley (The Duchess, Wuthering Heights), Rupert Evans (Hellboy, Agora), Nora von Waldstaetten (Carlos, The Countess), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (What's Your Number?, The Raven) and Tom Weston-Jones (Copper, MI5).

Sutherland will be honored during the Opening Ceremony with the inaugural Crystal Nymph Award for his lifelong achievements in film and television. Ed Bernero
"International crime has historically been a problem very difficult to overcome," says Ed Bernero. "The volume of these crimes has expanded in a world in which we're all wired, giving criminals increasing access to high tech illegal activities. But the laws do not support cross border investigations, often giving criminals the edge. The unique team in Crossing Lines WOULD have the authority to pursue these crimes, giving our international audience a fresh and powerful drama. We couldn't be happier to see it open this year's Monte-Carlo Television Festival."
Rola Bauer
"We are honored and thrilled to see Crossing Lines given the first-ever distinction of a drama SERIES opening the Monte-Carlo Television Festival," says Rola Bauer. "Ed Bernero's brilliant stories, our gifted cast, the extraordinary locations we've shot in Europe, all combine to make a truly international drama series that literally and figuratively transcends boundaries. With the support of STUDIOCANAL, we have completed the first 10 hours and we are extremely proud to show the results at Monte-Carlo."

TANDEM and Scott Free most recently partnered on the Emmy® and Golden Globe®-nominated adaptation of Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth.
World Without End is an adaptation of Ken Follett's international best-selling novel set amidst natural disaster, plague and war in 14th century England two hundred years after the construction of the great cathedral in The Pillars of the Earth. World Without End picks up with a new cast of characters, including Caris, a feisty young woman played by Charlotte Riley (The Duchess, Wuthering Heights), who inspires her medieval town of Kingsbridge to confront the most powerful forces of her time, namely the Church and the Crown, as they fight to save their town from ruin and, ultimately, usher in a new era of freedom, innovation and enlightenment.
As the network showcased its TV About Movies approach with The Kennedys, REELZ' all-absorbing presentation of World Without End will take viewers behind the scenes of the spectacular mini-series, into the careers of the cast and creators and deep into the vast world of movies that derive from best-selling books, depict the Middle Ages and explore the timeless intrigue of politics and religion.

Stan E. Hubbard

"World Without End is a monumental mini-series, told in a way that's as big as the author himself. With The Kennedys we conditioned our audience to know that our network is home to the biggest mini-series and World Without End is exactly that," said Stan E. Hubbard, CEO of ReelzChannel. "We're proud to take our viewers inside Ken Follett's intriguing and magnificent world through a story that is cinematic in scope with an award-winning cast, crew and creators."

"Given their impressive marketing and promotion campaign for The Kennedys, REELZ emerged as an exciting and compelling partner to present World Without End to the U.S. audience. This project is more than a labor of passion; it was conceived and produced as an eight-hour feature film with a team of talent that possesses the craftsmanship to bring that goal home. We look forward now to partnering with Stan Hubbard and REELZ to go for the gold with World Without End," said Rola Bauer, President and Partner of TANDEM COMMUNICATIONS (a STUDIOCANAL company).
